I am not a hardware guy...
I can't tell you how many times I have said "I am not a hardware guy". Applies to my career as well as home.
I have a ceiling fan in our bedroom that burned-out. We bought a new one. I have to install it.
I just have to figure out how to 1) get the old one down, and 2) get the new one up.
I am soooo screwed...

Heh, been there ... done that.
The fact that you already have a ceiling fan up means that 80% of the battle is done. You've got the support and wiring in place.
I highly recommend you have another person help you ... just to keep the fan supported as you are disconnecting & reconnecting it. Also, turn off the power to the room at the breaker ... way to easy to get a shock when you're working in an unfamiliar position.
Many fans have hooks on the side of the mounting bracket that will let you hang the fan half attached so you can work on the wiring.
I highly recommend Hunter fans ... they are quiet and easy to put together. Get one with a built-in remote for the best results. Menards (on Higgins) and Home Depot (on Barrington) both have a good selection. If you want a Casablanca fan, there is a place called 'Fan-C-Fan' (on Golf, just west of Higgins) that carries them. Make sure you keep the receipt in case you need to use the warrantee.
Best of luck,

Unfortunately, you misinterpreted the picture.
That's the old fan! I haven't even taken it down yet!
We got a Hunter fan from Home Depot (nice, not flashy, white 52" one... no lights).
We'll see how it goes!
